So you are thinking about a career or maybe just an adventure in Teaching English as a Foreign Language. You’re in luck, you’ve come to the right place. There is no hype here, just friendly advice.
One of the big issues in the TEFL world is over hyped marketing of TEFL courses. You may or may not need it. Some of the long term TEFL teachers got their start with a good teaching book, a good grammar book, and a good dictionary. You can find them at Amazon.
Unfortunately because of the over hyping of TEFL courses, finding solid information on courses is difficult. I’m here to say that despite what you may read elsewhere, just about every course has some benefits. As a long time TEFL teacher, the quality of the course is usually in direct proportion to the cost, but even a low cost online course will give you what you need to succeed in the TEFL classroom. Be sure to check out TNN’s TEFL Course Roundup and The Teacher Training Room on TEFLWatch.
One of the first things you should do as a new teachers in take in as much information as possible. I’d just suggest you read the archives at TEFLWatch. TEFLWatch is an international TEFL Job watchdog site. Things don’t always go well when you’re a new teachers, but TEFLWatch is there to help you out.
If you’re interested in seeing what jobs are available, visit Great TEFL Jobs and check out their job listings or check the job listing here at The TEFL News Network. You’re sure to discover a great job. But remember, before signing on the dotted line, ask about them on the TEFLWatch Forum.
It’s come to my attention that some new teachers are paying recruiters to find them a job. Don’t pay anyone to help you find a TEFL job. There is no need and in fact it can hurt. Many of the jobs that pay the least require you to pay a placement fee. That’s doesn’t make sense at all.
The TEFLWatch Forum provides an excellent place to go and talk about Teaching English with experienced teachers. It’s one of the only places TEFL teachers can go to talk about courses and jobs in an uncensored environment.
I really want to help you. My email is teflnews@gmail.com and I want to hear from any questions you have about TEFL.
